You may have heard that legislation has changed with regard to Asbestos. This effects

 every business regardless of size or nature of company.  You must now carry out an 

asbestos risk assessment of all your business premises. 1074 Consulting are able 

to assist you with this.  

 Your Main duties are – 

  1. Take reasonable steps to determine the location and condition of materials likely to contain asbestos.
  2. Presume materials contain asbestos unless there is strong evidence that they do not.
  3. Make and keep an up to date record of the location and condition of the asbestos coated material (ACM) or presumed ACM’s in the premises.
  4. Assess the risk of the likelihood of anyone being exposed to fibres from these materials
  5. Prepare a plan setting out how the risk from the materials are to be managed
  6. Take necessary steps to put the action plan into action
  7. Review and monitor the plan, periodically
  8. Provide information on the location and condition of the materials to anyone who is liable to work on them or disturb them.

 Background Information

  •   New Asbestos Regulations are the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations (CAW)

  • They came into effect on 21 November, 2002 and will be brought in over next five years.

  • Two Regulations have a delayed start –

Regulation 4, “The duty to manage asbestos in non-domestic premises”, which 

comes in to force on 24th May 2004.

Regulation 20, this relates to the analysis of bulk samples in accredited laboratories.

ACoP to be published in November 2002 by HSE to support the new duty to manage asbestos

existing AcoP’s to be revised December 2002.

  • L27 “Work with asbestos which doesn’t normally require a license”.

  • L28 “Work with asbestos insulation, asbestos coating and asbestos insulating board”.
